[Bug 500551] Fails to respond to Volume +/- keys within 100 msec HIG requirement

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be
reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the stable
release - Oneiric Ocelot. It would help us greatly if you could test
with it so we can work on getting it fixed. You can find out more about
it at http://www.ubuntu.com/download . Thanks again and we appreciate
your help.

Title:
Fails to respond to Volume +/- keys within 100 msec HIG requirement

Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

Volume key are included on many (particularly) laptop devices. When
the user presses, the system should respond by raising or lowing the
volume until an upper, or lower bound is reached. The connection
between the action and result should be near instantaneous and the
GNOME HIG sets a requirement of not more than 100 milliseconds delay.

Frequently, especially under load, this target is missed (delays as
high as 2-3 seconds!); as though g-s-d is waiting for a (rate-
limited) notification to have been displayed before processing the
next volume key-press in the queue---volume key presses frequently
come in busts of 5-10 keypresses at a time.

Ideally all key presses should be handled immediately; handling
volume changes within the HIG requirements is especially important,
because of it is needed to prevent hearing damage (on headphones) or
embarrassment (Ubuntu used in a quiet university lecture room, or
  silent library).
