Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be
reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the stable
release - Oneiric Ocelot. It would help us greatly if you could test
with it so we can work on getting it fixed. You can find out more about

  After today's rather large update using recovery boot (update-manager
  known to be sick), proceeded to regular terminal login and called gdm
  using 'sudo gdm'.  Login was OK.

  However, some failure, perhaps with restoring panels caused large
  black areas to appear on the desktop which could not be reversed.
  Mousing around made them worse.

  This is being submitted from low-graphics mode.

  That update was so large it is hard to pin this down, and I hope you
  are able to say what happened.

  BTW, since the update is after the Beta release date, can I consider
  this the beta now or is it still alpha?
