Title:
copying many small files to USB drive is extremely slow
Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
Binary package hint: nautilus
Copying a large number of small files from an internal hard disk to a
USB 2.0 pendrive is very slow. Here are three proofs that the
operating system is definitely doing something wrong:
1) Copying a large number of small files is a couple of orders of magintudes slower than copying one single file with the same total size (e.g. 1000 files of 100kB vs 1 file of 100MB).
2) Let F be a folder containing 1000 files of 100kB in our internal hard disk. Let's zip it into one zip file. Let's copy the zip file to the pendrive. Now we extract it directly (from the zip on the pendrive into the pendrive). Extracting the file is a lot faster than copying them from the internal hard disk to the pendrive. Note that it is creating and writing exactly the same number of files and of the same size, so if it can create and write them (besides extracting them!) that fast, copying them from the hard disk to the pendrive should be at the very least as fast.
If it was an issue with the hardware, unzipping would be at least as
slow as copying from the hard disk.
3) Another operating system (namely Windows) on the same machine with
the same hard disk and the same pendrive does the same 100 times
faster.
