[Bug 878188] Re: Network Manager assigns incorrect MAC address to eth devices

Its not NetworkManager.

According to the NetworkManager.conf manpage the no-auto-default has
nothing to do with it.

Doing a Google search for that specific MAC address aa:00:04:00:0a:04
tells a different story.

Apparently installed DECnet software can do this on your system. I have
found libdnet, dnet-common and xtrans-dev on my system. But don't ask me
how it got there.

Title:
Network Manager assigns incorrect MAC address to eth devices

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After upgrading from 11.04 to 11.10, my MAC address for my Ethernet
connection was changed to a default value. My actual MAC address for
the device is not used. I have confirmed this by upgrading two
separate laptops, and both had their Ethernet device MAC addressed
changed to the same default value. Neither were able to connect to a
restricted LAN without adding this (new) MAC address to the MAC
  filters.

The first laptop uses a wireless connection (using broadcom restricted
drivers), and the second laptop uses wired Ethernet connection.

When booting to recovery terminal, the MAC address is the correct
  (original) value.

  NetworkManager.conf contains the following:
  no-auto-default=aa:00:04:00:0a:04

I removed this, but this did not change anything. Both laptops now
have a MAC address of aa:00:04:00:0a:04
