Message #40394
[Bug 879069] Re: language-selector doesn't automatically link fontconfig files for CJK users
I made a few tests as well, and these are some notes that apply to both
Natty and Oneiric:
* If I install, upgrade or downgrade language-selector using
'sudo dpkg -i ...' or 'sudo apt-get install ...' in a terminal
window, a symlink is added if
- language-selector spots a CJK language as my first choice user
language, and
- there is no other similar symlink previously.
I think it happens when the post-install script in
language-selector-common_x.xx_all.deb is executed.
* When I do the same using Synaptic or Update Manager, no symlink is
added.
* Once language-selector has been installed, there are two ways to
change the symlink:
1. Apply a CJK language system-wide from language-selector's
"Language" tab.
2. Use the 'fontconfig-voodoo' program from a terminal window (as
sudo).
So as regards language-selector I don't see any changed behavior. Please
let me know if I missed anything.
Possibly something changed as regards installing or upgrading Ubuntu as
a whole. In that case it's probably the installer that changed, so I
added ubiquity to this bug report.
The logic behind the way Ubuntu deals with fontconfigs is not crystal
clear to me, and it's not obvious what the desired behavior is. Possibly
there is a need to reconsider the model for handling CJK specific
fontconfig settings.
** Also affects: ubiquity (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: New
** Changed in: language-selector (Ubuntu)
Status: Confirmed => Incomplete

Title:
language-selector doesn't automatically link fontconfig files for CJK
users
Status in “language-selector” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
There are several fontconfig files for CJK users in /etc/fonts/conf.avil/ started with "69-language-selector-".
But in Oneiric, language-selector doesn't make symbolic links to /etc/fonts/conf.d/ automatically.
This bug is happening at installing Ubuntu with CJK language choosed, and also installing new CJK language packages using language-selector.
I tested with Ubuntu 11.10 at Korean, Japanese, Chinese (simplified), Chinese (traditional) environment.
Also tested with Ubuntu 11.10 English, and install Korean, Japanese, Chinese (simplified), Chinese (traditional) language packages.
But, I'm native Korean speaker, so please test for CJ more.
