Just noticed that this bug might be identical to Bug #842007. I'll make

Title:
[Oneiric] No Wireless Functionality After Edubuntu Installation

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Edubuntu 11.10 64bit. Intel Corporation WIFI Link 5100 on a 64bit Sony
  VAIO

Wireless works flawlessly with LiveCD. Post install, however, wireless
  doesn't work.

During install, I checked off the option to install the wireless
  network.

  Symptoms (after installed reboot):

1.) No wireless networks are shown as being available.
2.) The wireless network which had been installed does not work.
3.) If one disables wireless networking, it cannot be re-enabled without restarting.

Removed installation and installed Xubuntu 11.10. Wireless works
flawlessly after installation. The problems 'seems' to be Unity/Gnome
  related?
