I can confirm the behaviour described by NikTheGeek in comment #25 
$ ck-list-sessions  shows one active and one inactive session as described by Chris Coulson in comment #8
Updated from Natty to Oneiric, Ubuntu is up to date: lightdm version 1.0.1-0ubuntu6
So maybe a regression?

  Oneiric Ocelot with latest update. Nautilus, Disk Utility are unable
  to mount/format/create partitions on USB drives.

  User is presented with 'Not Authorized' error.
