Title:
No error message when logging in from GUI to user without write
  permissions on ~

Status in Light Display Manager:
  Confirmed
Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
I installed afresh 11.10 beta, updated, and recreated my old user by
copying the folder to /home and creating a new user with the same
name. I ended up by mistake getting the wrong ownership of the home
  folder.

From the login screen, when I choose the pre-existing user and type in
the password, the screen goes blank as though it's going to loog in,
but then it bounced right back to the log in screen with no error
  message.

The problem is that there's no indication of what went wrong, and
  there should be.
