  the top TEST AREA picture's transparency shows 50%, and shows the same
  in edit mode and Slide Show mode.

  4) What happens instead is this picture looks different between the
  two modes.

  WORKAROUND: Highlight top box -> Format -> Area... -> Transparency tab
  -> click the Gradient radio button -> Start value combo box 50% -> End
  value combo box 51% -> OK button
