  probably should be chmod 1770; chgrp lightdm; like /var/log/gdm

  current permissions preclude creation of
  /var/log/lightdm/x-0-greeter.log when lightdm runs the greeter as can
  be seen from /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log:
