[Bug 876031] Re: lightdm could do with showing some diagnostics on text console

It's entirely reasonable to expect that for whatever reason lightdm
might not be able to start up a normal X session, the user should be put
into a failsafe-x environment so they have more to go on than raw
console spew.

lightdm could do with showing some diagnostics on text console

Bug description:
In Oneiric it appears if lightdm fails for some reason the user is left with a set of the previous startup messages
on the console, no apparent login prompt and nothing telling them what to do. It also doesn't provide
any diagnostics on that console for anyone remotely trying to help them.

  Ideally it should on failure:
    1) Switch to vt with a login prompt
    2) Output a line or two saying that it knows lightdm failed - preferably pointing them at the log file.
    3) If it can have a pattern to check for the X server itself having failed and being the reason lightdm failed
then it would be useful to display it.

  Dave
