Title:
Clock-applet (gnome-panel) uses "GMT" in the names of timezones
instead of "UTC"
Status in “gnome-panel” package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed
Bug description:
Binary package hint: gnome-panel
Now in the Timezone location settings we can see:
Japan (GMT+9)
China (GMT+8)
India (GMT+5:30)
Russia - Moscow Time (GMT+3 / GMT+4)
France (GMT+1 / GMT+2)
United Kingdom (GMT / GMT+1)
United States - Eastern Time (GMT-5 / GMT-4)
United States - Pacific Time (GMT-8 / GMT-7)
etc.
But the timezone names should be:
Japan (UTC+9)
China (UTC+8)
India (UTC+5:30)
Russia - Moscow Time (UTC+3 / UTC+4)
France (UTC+1 / UTC+2)
United Kingdom (UTC / UTC+1)
United States - Eastern Time (UTC-5 / UTC-4)
United States - Pacific Time (UTC-8 / UTC-7)
etc.
(I mean "UTC" instead of "GMT" in the name of each timezone).
For more information about UTC time scale read this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UTC
"UTC replaced GMT as the basis for the main reference time scale or civil time in various regions on 1 January 1972."
GMT time scale is no longer supported (since 1970's). All time providers (NTP-servers, GPS, etc.) in our days use UTC time scale only for time synchronization.
GMT is deprecated. Why do you still use it in the TZ-names?
Just replace all the "GMT" with "UTC" in all TZ names. Thats all.
