I can confirm the details of David's bug report.  I am able to log into
AIM with pidgin, but receive the same error when trying with Empathy.
Empathy is able to connect to other services like Jabber & Yahoo.

  Whenever I try to connect to AIM, I get a "Connection can't be
  established error." It works on my other Mac OS X computer under Adium
  and on Ubuntu on Pidgin.
