[Bug 773769] Re: Application not offered to be added to launcher if installed from list
The next development release of Software Center in Precise includes an
implementation of the updated Unity launcher integration specification,
as described at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareCenter#launching . With
this new implementation, the slide-in panel that prompts to add an
application to the launcher is no longer used, and instead the features
is enabled for all applications by checking the new menu item "View->New
Applications in Launcher” (and this is enabled by default).
This new functionality works for both the applications details view (as
before) and now also for applications being installed via list views
(category, search, etc.).

Binary package hint: software-center
When a program is being installed from the list view such as the
search results page, there is no prompt to add it to the launcher even
if the details view is opened.
