After more than 6 months of waiting I reinstalled ubuntu, which fixed
the problem. As I said, every pdf caused it, but I can obviously no
longer reproduce the bug. I have attached a pdf from my old home
directory's downloads folder that I wasn't able to open in the past in
case you have another way of reproducing it.

  evince always hangs when loading any pdf

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: evince

  Ubuntu 11.04, but it happened in 10.10 as well

  The program loads properly from the command line. Its only when I try
  and open a file that the CPU jupms -- and stays -- high. The page
  never renders.
