the Oneiric version is 2.30, you got that version from a ppa, that's not
an Ubuntu bug (and yes that version is known to break eog)

Bug description:
  Image viewer is not working in Oneiric. It just doesn't respond or
  hangs on startup. Shotwell viewer is however working.
