thanks for the bug report
its not a bug you are trying to do some thing that  which is not supported by empathy.in future it may be possible but not now. so closing the bug now.

  I'm trying to add aardvark (http://www.vark.com/) to empathy, but when
  I try to search for Aardvark in the gmail network, the search button
  is disabled, so I click it and nothing happens.
