i am also affected by this issue thanks for the bug report.
i also add friend from gmail account but email goes towards him.but he was not be able to add me.
after this i tried to add my friend by empathy than i log out and login next day.
on the next day the contact was added but i don;t from where it has be added.

  cannot accept contact (there is no accept button)

  There is no button to accept or to deny contact.. Same thing was in
  11.04 (now using 11.10). I tried to reinstall but no help.
