Thank you for taking time in filing the bug to make ubuntu better.
can you confirm this issue with the 11.10 and 3.1 or 3.2 version of empathy?
attach the haze's yahoo log file with the bug ?

Status in “empathy” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  For the past few months "Offline" and "Available" are the only
  statuses I have seen for Yahoo users. Pidgin shows the correct status
  "away", "busy" etc. .
