[Bug 901945] Re: network manager applet doesn't work in precise
So then you could just edit /etc/network/interfaces, remove the entries
for wlan0 or eth0, and reboot to make it work again? This certainly
clarifies things.
Please confirm that this workaround works, but this would indeed be an
installer problem.

Title:
network manager applet doesn't work in precise
Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
In precise 12.04 alpha (dec 8 build, alt iso), Either or both Xubuntu
or Ubuntustudio (and presumably others) when the iso is installed on a
laptop/netbook using the wireless device for a network connection. On
boot the network manager does not show a list of available wireless
networks. (in Ubuntu Studio the applet doesn't even show) If the
wireless connection started during boot fails, network manager is
unable to cycle the connection.
If the install is done by failing the network connect and installing
with no network connection, on reboot the network manager works as
expected.
