100 % confirm  bug i have also seen this issue . i enter my nick and
login.than i want to add into different  channel like ubuntu-bugs etc.
but there is no option to do so.or cant send msg  any other.

  unable to send message in Empathy IRC Chat

  I can not send massage in chat. Indicator send me notification to
  identify nick, but I cannot send message /msg .... I can write a text
  at botton of Empathy window.
