[Bug 383700] Re: eog uses too much memory

same here.

Files (JPG) with a size of 11MB use ~100MB memory,
with a size of 70MB+ use more than 1GB memory and don't use the swap (it seems so).

On the window: The application open and the borders/menu is visible. The
Prozessbar can run to the end and hide. The place for the image is still
black. Than the Computer freeze. The mouse are able to move the first
2-3 secounds than it freeze too.

Focus a other window or change to console(tty1...6) are not possible.
The Bug can reproduced.

Title:
  eog uses too much memory

Status in Eye of GNOME:
  New
Status in “eog” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: eog

eog trys to open very large images. If the image is too big, the system is just swaping, and it is hard to stop it.
  possible solutions:
    - eog should not open very large images
    - eog could create carefuly a scaled small version of the image, and shows the scaled down version
