Title:
Firefox freezes Ubuntu when page with large image is loaded

Status in “firefox” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: firefox

In Ubuntu (10.10 Maverick Meerkat), when using Firefox (3.6.13), this
problem occurs, however it does not occur using Google Chrome
  (10.0.648.82 beta).

  To replicate:
  1. Open Firefox
  2. Go to: http://static02.linkedin.com/scds/common/u/img/pic/pic_grey_border_3600x1800.png
  3. Ubuntu should freeze requiring a reboot

I discovered the image URL above as the cause of this by following this process:
  a) On opening Firefox with many saved tabs and windows, I isolated the LinkedIn tab as the one causing the freeze
  b) Using the "Web Developer" add-on, I first tried disabling JavaScript and then disabling all images before discovering that the problem would not occur with images disabled
  c) I made a local copy of the HTML file causing the problem and could reproduce the freeze with the local file
  d) I isolated the CSS file referenced in the local HTML file and made a local copy of the CSS file
  e) I isolated the problem to be on line 119 of the file: http://static02.linkedin.com/scds/common/u/css/default.css

This same problem should happen to Ubuntu/Firefox installations like
mine for any page on LinkedIn that makes use of this "default.css"
  file and the "pic_grey_border_3600x1800.png" image.

If this is in fact a bug in the video driver for my computer, please
let me know if you need further information to help debug properly.

Firefox should be able to load large images without freezing the
entire Ubuntu. Also, Ubuntu should be stable enough to prevent any
application from causing it to freeze without recovery. I shouldn't
have to make special configurations to my video driver just so that
Firefox can work correctly, however this is still better than having
  Firefox crash my system unexpectedly.

Is there anything I can do to resolve this problem or will I have to
wait for the next updates to either/both Firefox and/or Ubuntu?
