  1) Ubuntu 11.10

  2) apt-cache policy libreoffice-writer
  libreoffice-writer:

  3) What is expected to happen in a running instance of LibreOffice
  Writer is when a desktop PC USB connected to printer HP OfficeJet Pro
  8500 has the printer off, then the printer is turned on, Writer
  recognizes the printer quickly.

  4) What happens instead is Writer does not recognize the printer.
  However, the system does when the printer is turned on and is able to
  print from other applications (Evince and Firefox). This occurs every
  time the printer is off, and Writer is running.

  This does not occur with a netbook, WiFi connected to a router,
  ethernet connected to the same desktop, with the desktop running a
  cups server.

  WORKAROUND: Turn on the printer, restart Writer.
