  3) What is expected to happen in LibreOffice Writer via the Terminal:

  cd ~/Desktop && wget
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/790354/+attachment/2148178/+files/Container1.doc
  && chmod -wxXst Container1.doc && lowriter --nologo Container1.doc

  double primary click on the OLE object and it is opened as it does in
  MS Word.

  4) What happens instead is one may not open the contained object.

  LibreOffice 3.3.2 installed from ppa:libreoffice/ppa
  (3.3.2-1ubuntu2~maverick1).
