Thank you for taking time in filing the bug to make ubuntu better.
very unexpected behavior and not the empathy bug its a telepathy indicator bug. i guess can you still reproduce it?
if so  than attach the mission control log and if possible than make the video of  the scene it will help us..

  Application doesnt start when started from Message indicator chat icon

Bug description:
  When empathy chat is started from message indicator it shows the screen for just a moment and then closes. When its started again for the second time the same way, it starts up normally with availability in offline mode. 
  Every time the application starts only on the second try.
