I think this bug can be closed - in Ubuntu 11.10, totem does pause when
you hit the spacebar when in windowed mode.

Bug description:
  With totem 1.4.1-0ubuntu4:
  When playing a media file in totem, when not in fullscreen mode, pressing space does not pause. Instead, it seems to 'highlight' the volume control, but does not appear to do anything useful. When in fullscreen mode, hitting space does pause the playback, which I think is the expected behavior (this is how many other media players work - ie mplayer, vlc, etc.)
