[Bug 881890] Re: the average rating problem

So, thanks for the suggestion, but I'm marking this as Won't Fix for the
reason I alluded to in my previous comment. We plan to order items by
number of users in a "Most Downloaded" section, because two distinct
ways of exposing interesting things is better than one. Once we do that,
Making "Top Rated" partly dependent on the number of users would make
the two sections unnecessarily similar. And the perfect is not the enemy
of the good here, because the hard part -- knowing the relative
popularity of each item -- would be the same level of difficulty for
either solution.

Title:
  the average rating problem

Status in “software-center” package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
  steps to reproduce:
  1. launch Ubuntu Software Store
  2. by the right of Best Rated, there's a More button that shows you the top 50 Best Rated apps in Ubuntu Software Store

  expected results:
since many people are interested in using Firefox and few people are interested in using Renmina, Firefox should appear above Renmina

  actual results:
although many people are interested in using Firefox and few people are interested in using Renmina, Firefox appears *way* below Renmina, in other words, Firefox isn't even a top 50 app, but Renmina is a top 10 app

  comments:
Firefox browses the internet well, Renmina connects to remote desktops excellently
Firefox does what its author says that it does well, Renmina does what its author says that it does excellently
quality shows you how well an app does what the app's author says that the app does

many people are interested in using Firefox and few people are interested in using Renmina
popularity shows you how many people are interesting in using an app

if I create an app that does something that few people want to do, but
my app does that thing excellently, it will be a top 10 app like
  Renmina is

quality (stars) * popularity (users) = importance (points), anyone?
