I've seen the same behavior in 3.4.4 using Courier 10 Pitch.

  is the text with Nimbus Sans L font looks in edit view as it does in

  ORIGINAL REPORTER COMMENTS: Observed in amd64 Natty (LibreOffice); not
  present in amd64 Maverick (OpenOffice).
