Message #71444
[Bug 1371963] Re: cannot set default audio device with alsa (pulse audio disabled, can only get audio to work in VLC)
5.1 is only available after you change the channel mode from 2ch to 6ch
which retask blue line in and pink mic Jack as output, before pulseaudio
probe the sound card during startup
Simple mixer control 'Channel Mode',0
Capabilities: enum
Items: '2ch' '4ch' '6ch'
Item0: '2ch'
this mean you have to change the channel mode and restart pulseaudio

Title:
cannot set default audio device with alsa (pulse audio disabled, can
only get audio to work in VLC)
Status in “alsa-driver” package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
Not very literate in Linux, had to disable Pulse Audio to get 5.1
sound to work. VLC will playback audio just fine by selecting sound
card within the application. No/incorrect default sound card for
system, cannot change through Gnome ALSA mixer.
