This has been fixed in Xubuntu 14.04 (lightdm-gtk-greeter + xfwm4 with
compositing enabled).

  Gray screen between unity greeter login and desktop

Status in “unity-greeter” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  I'm looking for a 'smooth' transition between unity greeter and my
  desktop screen. Instead, I get this ugly gray screen. The 'bug' is
  duplicated between two different computers (both home & work). Hope
  you can help, thank you in advance.
