I also ran into this bug today.

Unfortunately, trying to switch to free drivers and I hit this other bug
too: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-
drivers-331/+bug/1369398.

I'm currently stuck between bugs on my system :(
