11/1/2014   "Do this automatically for files like this..." NOT WORKING

I have the same problem, with Excel, Word, Adobe Acrobat and PDF files ETC.  
I've been quietly waiting for a fix and after so many new versions (I'm now on 33.02) , it's still not fixed.  I'm very surprised to find so few asking about this, as every indication, including the program chooser, points to nice functionality (if only it worked).
Wouldn't one think that after all this time, and with so many web sites "presenting the wrong way", that it may be time to consider Mozilla fixing this problem and not the rest of the world that should present better so that the great Foxfire functionality could work ?
I mean, the data is obviously there to launch whatever program is not launching.  Someone please have pity on the rest of the world and compensate for their inexcusable ignorance.  Please ?

Bug description:
  Downloading an unknown file type in Firefox displays a dialog for choosing which application to use for opening the file.
  The dialog contains a check box labelled "Always do this action from now on".
  Checking this option does not work: When I download a file of the same type next time, the same dialog is displayed again.

  This feature is broken for as long as I can remember (> 10 years).
  It's time it was fixed (or removed).
