Solution for adding icons to Applications:
Navigate in your file manager(whatever one you use) to Computer/usr/share/applications  folder.
Right click on theapplication you want added 
Select "Copy to..."
Click on "Desktop"folder onleft side of panel
Click Select button.

Done.
more complicated than drag and drop from the launcher, but fully effective.

  The specified location is not supported

  This happened to me in 13.10 too.
