i have tested new update from rolf's ppa and my scanner works!
(sane-backends 1.0.25-git20141116-trusty0)

  Fix Released

Bug description:
  on 12.10 the scanner doesn't work anymore.
  on 12.04 it worked on the same machine.
  the scanner still works on a second machine that was not upgraded by now.
