[Bug 1173492] Re: XRandR cannot set "scaling mode"

In my case the root cause of this issue was corrupted firmware rather
than problems with XRandR (X11-xserver-utils). The machine in question
had been running lm sensors 3.3.2 which was discovered to potentially
cause firmware corruption in Sept 2013.

The issue was immediately resolved following a re-flash of the BIOS on
the T60 in question.

Title:
  XRandR cannot set "scaling mode"

Status in “x11-xserver-utils” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  X11-xserver-utils 7.6+3 Precise

When entered from a terminal the command
   >xrandr --output DFP2 --set "scaling mode" "Full aspect"

  Gives the following error:

X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)
Major opcode of failed request: 157 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 11 (RRQueryOutputProperty)
Serial number of failed request: 35
Current serial number in output stream: 35

I use the ATI Proprietary FGLRX driver, does XRandR not use "scaling mode" with this driver?

I am attempting to change the behaviour of the display when I attempt
to change screen resolutions in KDE, my monitor (Acer H233H) appears
'stuck' in 1920x1080. When I attempt to switch to a lower resolution,
ie, 1280x720 (which is listed as a valid mode), the monitor does not
actually change mode, the displayed screen shrinks, with large black
bars on all 4 sides. the displayed part of the screen is 1280x720,
but, I expected the screen to fill the monitor, not a section of it.

  Thank you!
