[Bug 1397924] Re: [Clickpads] Cursor jumps when clicking

Simon P., I've been battling with parts of this same issue for a while
since I bought a laptop with a clickpad. The root cause is the default
settings for the Synaptics driver when using any clickpad are distinctly
user unfriendly for a default install. Hence, it may require some
additional work to check for a clickpad (if possible) and then adjust
accordingly. This suggested terminal commands won't fix everything if
applied upstream, but would go a long way in addressing many of these
issues.

Despite this, the issue you are reporting is an upstream one. Could you please report this problem to them via https://bugs.freedesktop.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=xorg :
Component: Input/Synaptics
Version: 7.7 (2012.06)
Severity: Enhancement
Hardware: All
OS: All
Priority: Lowest

Please provide a direct URL to your report once you have made it so that
it may be tracked.

Thank you for your understanding.

** Description changed:

- I am running Ubuntu 14.04 x64 on my Acer Travelmate B115-M and sometimes
- when i use the left or right touchpad key to make a mouse click, the
- cursor jumps to another place on the screen far away from its inital
- location and executes the click at that location.
+ With my Acer Travelmate B115-M running Ubuntu 14.04 x64, when I click
+ the bottom left or right area on my clickpad to either primary or
+ secondary click, the cursor jumps to another place on the screen far
+ away from its initial location and executes the click at that location.
+ The problem applies generally to clickpads in any laptop.

- For example: I want to perform a left click in the upper section of my screen with the touchpad key to open a browser tab
- What is expected to happen: I move the cursor to the browser tab and press the left key and the tab opens
- What happens instead: The cursor jumps to the lower left corner and performs the click there, the trash folder opens instead
-
- That problem is not always happening and i do not know how to produce it, however usually after a few
- minutes of working on my notebook and clicking around it will occur. Likely not a hardware problem as i already had the whole notebook replaced by my vendor, also with Win7 it seemed to work fine.
+ WORKAROUND: Execute the following at a terminal:
+ synclient RTCornerButton=0
+ synclient RBCornerButton=0
+ synclient LTCornerButton=0
+ synclient LBCornerButton=0
+ synclient AreaBottomEdge=3900
