Message #88357
[Bug 241781] Re: hp photosmart 7450 communication problems.
This seems to be a wake-up problem on some (probably older) printer
models.
Usually, a printer should wake up from power-saving mode simply by
sending a job (or even any kind of status or ink level request) to the
printer, a special wake-up command should not be needed. But one never
knows whether there are printers needing a wake-up command or printers
with a hardware/firmware bug.
Can someone of the HPLIP developers at HP have a look into this and
perhaps let HPLIP somehow precede print jobs with some wake-up command,
at least for printer groups where this is needed or even to all printers
where it is safe?

Title:
hp photosmart 7450 communication problems.
Status in HP Linux Imaging and Printing:
New
Status in hplip package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
My HP photosmart 7450 printer has been showing some communication problems since using Hardy. Prior to this, I've been running Debian stable on exactly the same hardware without any printer problems. The symptoms are:
printer is detected as photosmart 7400 & appears to install correctly. I can sometimes initially print one or two pages, then it locks up completely, I get a pop-up notice on the top panel about printer supplies low (although it isn't). At this point, the printer firmware appears to have hung - it doesn't respond to front-panel button presses & the only way to get it to respond is to pull the power supply for a few seconds. On reconnecting, it sometimes prints, sometimes doesn't.
I've tried uninstalling the hplip package and installing the latest version (2.8.5) from the hp website. It didn't make any difference, the symptoms are unchanged.
It looks like there's another user with the same problem:
