Dear Christopher
The bug had to do with an installation issue with texlive. I first
tried an upgrade to see if it fixed the problem, and apt-get reported it
was not installed (I am not sure how it was installed previously, but
apparently I had an older version; but I did have the same problem on my
laptop and my workstation). So I just installed it through apt-get and
the rendering is ok now.

Bug description:
Seems like it cannot find fonts it used to on Ubuntu 14.04 and no
replacement. I attach image of xpdf vs Ubuntu with output
Syntax Error: failed to load truetype font<0a>
