  The man page states:

         Visit http://portland.freedesktop.org/EmailConfig for information how to configure xdg-email to use the email client of your choice.

  This server appears to be incorrectly configured, and the web page is
  inaccessible.

  Browsing the source code, this bug appears to be active in all
  released versions.
