Is your "Record as" list empty as my, and 'gnome-audio-profiles-
properties' show something in list? I look is my Bug #1411973 is same as
your or no.

  Sound Recorder completely non-functional

Status in gnome-media package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  The "Sound Recorder" application does not appear to function as a way
  to record sound. The application appears to do nothing usefull at all.

  Ubuntu 14.04

  $ apt-cache policy gnome-media
  gnome-media:
    Installed: 3.4.0-1ubuntu2
