[Bug 1418326] Re: "lpr -p -P PDF" (prettyprint) hangs print job with sample string
In my original file which failed to print, the '//' does not start in column 1.
The full line, which I isolated by binary chopping, is:
optind = 0; // initialise the getopt static
By changing the 's' of the word "static" to (e.g.) 'S' (upper case) or '5' (five) or '*' enables the whole file to prettyprint to PDF.
Changing back to lower case 's' causes the original failure.

# CUPS reports "Filter failed" in web interface:
# PDF-169 Unknown Withheld 1k 1 stopped "Filter failed"
# RESET (remove job)
$ lprm -P PDF; lpstat -o PDF
$
Here are a few examples which *do not* cause a problem:
$ echo '// tatic' | lpr -p -P PDF
$ lpstat -o PDF
$
$ echo '// stati' | lpr -p -P PDF
$ lpstat -o PDF
$
$ echo '/ static' | lpr -p -P PDF
$ lpstat -o PDF
$
$ echo ' static' | lpr -p -P PDF
$ lpstat -o PDF
$
$ echo '/static' | lpr -p -P PDF
$ lpstat -o PDF
$
$ echo 'static' | lpr -p -P PDF
$ lpstat -o PDF
$
$ echo ' // static' | lpr -p -P PDF
$ lpstat -o PDF
$
Now I'm bored ;-)
$ echo '// static' | lpr -p -P PDF
$ lpstat -o PDF

I hope there are some clues, there. I'm assuming you will get my
system info from the "ubuntu-bug cups" I did.
