Lostground, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Saucy reached EOL on July 17, 2014.
See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

Is this an issue on a supported release?

Title:
  vertical coloured lines on boot

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Fresh install of ubunti 13.04, Dell Inspiron 1501, latest updates installed as of Jan 22. Vertical colured lines appear shortly after splash screen appears. Half the time machine will freeze and will need to be hard rebooted. If it does not freeze I can hear the audio chime for the log in screen, then closing the lid waiting and then resuming sees to bring the screen back. Also using external moniter will work while the lap top screen is at the same time unusable due this problem ,you can use Fn8 to toggle back and fourth till the screen is usable again. This appear to be a continuation of Bug#572521.
Using the 'quiet splash nomodset' option does not seem to consistently prevent the problem and screen resolution is very poor in this mode.
Screen will also "crash" into the vertical coloured lines if you try to "catch it" right before the machine goes to sleep.
