GIS performance breakthrough!

There is a free web based GIS tool called MapShaper which has the ability to
make borders less detailed by removing "unnecessary" vertices in shapefiles.
It only takes about one minute
to simplify your shapefile and in this way reduce the size considerably and
even, in my opinion, make it look better. The effect of using a lighter
shapefile (the Vietnam provinces shapefile was
reduced to about 1/60 of original size) is unbelievable. Loading maps and
the mouse-over effects are now a totally different experience.

This can also be done with ArcGIS, but the process is more complicated and
the software costs nothing less than $1.500.
