Agree that it is not ideal, but it did work fine in this case.

Yeah, but in general people will always install the newest version, just
like Bob inadvertently had, and I don't think it makes sense for us to
require everyone to use 8.3, for the reasons you state above (we dont use
any specific features, and --ignore-versions seems to work).
