On the more general note, what is a reasonable java version requirement for us? We are now requiring java 1.6, is it ok to require a version newer than u4 (released two years ago)?

It is possible to use a newer jaxb version on an older java, but I think it would require going the endorsed route. We probably want to avoid that complexity.
