I've succeeded in restoring postgres 8.4 from 9.0 a couple of times
but I can see there is indeed a syntax incompatibility here.

Moving to 9.1 on Ubuntu 10.04LTS is not really my recommended option
as 9.1 is not in the standard repositories.  Which is why I have been
advising people to stick with 8.4 until the new LTS comes out next
year.  But seems we like to live on the bleeding edge :-)

Ife if you can send me a dump I can see if there is anything can be
done to massage it into 8.4.  Otherwise you are going to have to set
about installing 9.1 on your ubuntu server by adding a custom
repository for the postgres version.
