I sort of agree, and was also thinking of using the  WebAPI  for reports

I would also like to generate an SMS with that link.

However, this still requires them to log in (and remember username/password)

Also, it would be great to be able to not have to generate the PDF
manually, but to automatically generate monthly reports - and  with the
parameters tailored to the user (primarily the user's root orgunit)
