This might not be limited to charts opened from dashboard, I'm also
seeing this for some charts when opening a favorite withing Event
visualiser. Sometimes the charts is opened, other times it gives an
"Error failed to render chart" message.

I also see this in the browser console:

Bug description:
  Event visualiser charts opened from dashboard are missing layout
  information. Depending on the layout of the favorite, either orgunit
  or period is simply missing in the Layout box of charts opened from
  the favorite. 2.17.
