Re: DHIS2 live VS DHIS2 war file

Agree with both Jason and Knut.

There are certain parameters within dhis2 live that are hard-coded and
thus restrict its ability to scale. It was designed initially to run
as single-user desktop application where it was important to hide the
messy details of configuring a web based application and database from
users (who were not skilled in system administration but were also
were responsible for installation). The most common use over time
became for demo and training purposes, where trainees can quickly
"fire it up" on their laptops without stepping through 20 pages of
installation guide. Importantly, it does not receive a great deal of
developer attention and testing as it is not really viewed as a
production tool.

Setting up dhis2 as a scalable multi-user production environment
requires considerable more planning and expertise at a number of
levels. I have found the dhis2-tools approach on ubuntu linux to be
useful in this regard, but still not in any way a replacement for
experience and knowledge of networks, operating systems and general
information system management principles, particularly related to
large scale system administration and security. So if you are
plotting a national deployment for example, you will want to consider
first how and where you are going to develop or acquire these skills.
Typical strategies include
(i)  growing-your own in-house skills;
(ii) linking with support partners, either external or sometimes
internal (eg ICT unit within MOH or elsewhere in government);
(iii) complete outsourcing of the entire hosting and management operation.
There are trade-offs associated with each of the above and they are
also not completely mutually exclusive.

dhis2-live is not really a shortcut :-(
